Treasures of the Sea given ‘Another Life’ in Leeds Craft Show…
As Craft & Design Month continues this week The Craft Centre and Design Gallery tucked away underneath Leeds City Art Gallery continues to celebrate and highlight the art of recycling in their spring show Another Life. Capturing the imagination of visitors since March, the show has something for everyone including jewellery, sculptures and wall hung works all created by makers who reclaim, upcycle and re-invent materials turning them into beautiful contemporary craft pieces.
Tania Covo is one of the featured jewellers who makes beautiful pieces of jewellery from sea glass which have been rounded and frosted by the waves over decades. These treasures of the sea in an assortment of shapes and colours were once a waste product but have become desirable and collectable. “Most of the pieces I use in my designs were found by professional beachcombers on the North East coast of the UK, but I sometimes use pieces from other countries as well. Creating wearable objects out of materials that most people would walk past without noticing is just one of the aspects of jewellery making I find so inspiring.”
Visitors have recently commented on “the amazing variety” of work to admire or purchase at The Craft Centre. With the Art Gallery closed for essential repairs this year, it has proven itself as a remarkable stand-alone Yorkshire attraction and in the words of one visitor “a wonderful place.” Their seasonal exhibition programme highlights the very best of contemporary craft and with regular changing exhibitions visitors will never tire of this hidden gem in the city. Open Tuesday – Saturday 10am – 5pm, closed Sundays & Mondays. Please contact the gallery approaching Bank Holidays for revised opening hours.
