Elvis Loving Budgie with a Quiff Inspires New Work on Display at Leeds Craft Centre…

An exciting new show at The Leeds Craft and Design Gallery celebrating the romance of British Craft is providing visitors with not only some great Valentine’s Day gift ideas but a real insight into contemporary craft today. Made with Love features handmade ceramics, jewellery, glass, textiles and sculpture made by British makers, some of which are from Yorkshire. Expect to see quirky cats on vases, pretty jewellery, delicate porcelain vessels and sure to put a smile on visitors faces are hand built ceramic budgies by rising talent Charlotte Miller. “My love of budgies started when I created Brian, an Elvis loving budgie with a quiff. Since then I have created a whole range of characters in their own settings with a range of hair styles, facial hair and jumpers; after all it is a bit chilly in this climate for them!  I find inspiration in vintage kitsch, seaside postcard humour and observing animals with each other and their owners.”

Gallery Manager Jane Laverty spoke of this annual take on Valentine’s Day within their seasonal exhibition programme: “There is so much to discover with every visit; our Made with Love exhibition is just one of our events which we hope will inspire people to think differently about what they buy for a loved one this Valentine’s Day. Every purchase supports our British makers as well as supporting the work we do here as part of the Leeds Visual Arts Scene.”

You can see Made with Love at The Leeds Craft Centre and Design Gallery until the 12th March; meanwhile Carry Akroyd’s print exhibition is still on show until the 27th February and Gin Durham’s ceramic showcase (as seen on Made in Leeds TV recently) will end on 30th April.
